I have always been fascinated by the complex mechanisms that make life work!
My research interest lies in understanding the interaction mechanisms between metformin and the GI tract. Metformin is the most prescribed drug for treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in humans, but it's mechanisms of action are not fully understood. Mitochondria of resident cells in the GI tract have a singular role in energy balance in our body and our focus is to understand how metformin alters the metabolic pathways of those cells and the consequences and/or interaction of those changes with our microbiome, resulting in both beneficial and adverse effects. Our final goal is to help model future treatments to favour the beneficial outcomes that type 2 diabetes patients need.
