Our team at Bacterial Genomics of the Gut Microbiota 2026
Members of our team recently participated in the Bacterial Genomics of the Gut Microbiota 2026 course in Umeå, contributing with research presentations, teaching and organisation.
From 28–30 September, PhD students, postdocs and researchers gathered in Umeå for Bacterial Genomics of the Gut Microbiota 2026, a three-day course focused on genome-resolved metagenomics and its applications in gut microbiome research.
Our lab was well represented throughout the course. Diego Barriales, Sara Roggiani and Ke Zhang presented their research in poster sessions, providing opportunities to share their work, receive feedback and engage in discussions with fellow researchers. Valentina Tremaroli contributed to the course as both a lecturer and member of the organising committee. Another of the organisers were our former team member Chinmay Dwibedi, who is now leading his own research group at Umeå University.
The programme combined lectures, scientific discussions and hands-on sessions covering topics including taxonomic profiling, metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), microbial species distribution across populations and state-of-the-art sequencing approaches.
The course provided valuable opportunities for learning, scientific exchange and new connections, while contributing to the training and development of early-career researchers in the rapidly evolving field of microbiome genomics.
After three fruitful days of science and inspiring discussions, the team also found some time to experience Umeå in its beautiful autumn colours.
