Although we are aware of the relevance of the microbiota and its byproducts on host physiology, the real impact they exert in health and disease is only beginning to be unraveled. Thus, this is an exciting time to delve in this complex field of research.
My research seeks to identify microbiota-derived metabolites capable of imprinting immunomodulatory properties within the host immune system, with the potential to serve as novel therapeutic interventions against cardiometabolic and cardiovascular disorders. With this aim, I combine my background in immunology with the broad and complementary expertise of the Bäckhed laboratory (clinical data, bioinformatics, in vitro and in vivo setups) to advance our current understanding from correlative studies linking the microbiota and metabolome with cardiovascular diseases toward causality and mechanistic insights. Hopefully, the results arising from my research will help unveil new therapeutic targets or treatment strategies against cardiovascular disorders such as atherosclerosis, a leading cause of mortality worldwide.
