Wallenberg Scholar Fredrik Bäckhed was interviewed by the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation about how weight reduction surgery and diabetes drugs impact bacteria.
Both therapeutics and weight loss surgery can alleviate type 2 diabetes, but both can also cause adverse events. Professor Bäckhed describes the interest in finding out if the effects of the drugs and therapy, positive as well as negative, could be due to changes in gut microbiota.
