Professor Bäckhed recieved the IVA Gold Medal from H.M. The King.

In 2020 Professor Fredrik Bäckhed was awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). Due to the pandemics the gold medal was presented at this year's Annual Meeting of the Academy on October 29 in the presence of T.M. The King and Queen.

For 100 years IVA has recognized outstanding contributions to technology, economics, business and society. The medals are presented by IVA’s patron, H.M. The King.

Original motivation (translation):

Professor Fredrik Bäckhed is awarded the Academy's Gold Medal for his outstanding microbiological research on the connection between the gut microbiota and human metabolism and health, in combination with developing production techniques and methods for new treatments and actively communicating knowledge to the public.

Our research group takes a translational research approach to investigate how the gut microbiota contributes to cardiometabolic disease.

We aim to increase the knowledge of the metagenome and explore how metabolites interacts in the processes for developing T2D and CVD.
