Professor Bäckhed one of eight KAW Scholars
Professor Fredrik Bäckhed is one of eight researcher from the University of Gothenburg to be appointed "Wallenberg Scholar" by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). The programme aims to provide researchers with the opportunity for curiosity-driven and long-term research. In total, 118 Wallenberg Scholars at 13 Swedish universities have been granted five-year grants.
Professor Bäckhed was granted SEK 20 million for research on the impact of diabetes treatment on intestinal bacteria.
"Fredrik Bäckhed’s research has shown that bacteria that live naturally in our intestines influence the risk both of obesity and of developing type 2 diabetes. Now he intends to study how common diabetes therapies impact the bacteria." KAW
