Rima Chakaroun awarded in Clinical Research

27 February 2025

Our team member Rima Chakaroun, a physician specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology, has been honored with the New Investigator Award in Clinical Research by the European Association for Obesity (EASO). This award recognizes her outstanding research on obesity and metabolism, particularly focusing on the roles of gut microbiota, nutrition, and sex-specific factors in the disease.

"By 2035, half of the population is expected to have obesity. Middle-aged women will be especially affected, and their risk of heart disease will increase," says Dr. Rima Chakaroun.

Research indicates that the gut microbiome significantly influences obesity and fat tissue function. However, its impact on men and women may differ, and this area is not yet fully understood. "Our research focuses on a key question: How does the microbiome influence differences in obesity and heart disease risk between men and women, and can these insights improve health?"" says Rima. She is involved in interdisciplinary research programs, exploring new treatment methods and supporting patients in adopting sustainable lifestyle changes.

The New Investigator Award in Clinical Research is presented to promising young researchers who have shown excellence and dedication in obesity research. Along with the honor, the award includes a research grant of 300,000 DKK from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. As part of the award, Rima will present her research at the European Congress on Obesity in Málaga in May 2025.
